The problem is that to many people are wrongly accused by rival gang members "The police" and they cannot be trusted. They don't protect and serve they just get away with lynching our African American Young men "evolved slavery" with all the prisons and they're building more individually owned? And 2.3 million American Citizens in jails and institutions that prison owner now owns those people. And we're one of the only countries that tries children as adults? SLAVERY EVOLVED. REVERSED CIVIL RIGHTS..

Bringing back the death penalty should work fine since that way violent criminals won't be released.
What you think ppl that r*pes, murder, traffickers, etc... can be "reform" lol of course helping violent criminals more then law-abiding citizens.

I recently left my job as a CO after a decade. The things I've seen... We need to do something for prison reform. Some prisoners are so volatile and violent there's no way they should be with normal prisoners. Please remember, there are many people in there for NON VIOLENT crimes fighting for their lives everyday. There are extremely mentally ill people in there as well as extremely violent. And I've seen men go into solitary confinement come out as ghosts of their former selves and they were put in there for DEFENDING themselves but in prison, it doesn't matter.
It's horrible. And it's all for profit now so it's even worse.. They just pack people in there, as many as they can get in because they get money for it.

      @elric sedric Totally correct...
It's not on the prison system to "fix" individuals that can't, or don't want, to be "fixed". The prison will simply be those individuals homes for the rest of their lives. It's simple really.
If I was thrown into a prison, I certainly would not automatically become a rage monster that couldn't function in society when I got out. The people that come out like that, went IN like that, and NOTHING will change them. People can't seem to grasp this concept. 💡

Honestly I think it's great what he's trying to do with solitary confinement. I also understand the issues people have with it. It's a very fine line both ways. But it does make sense to try to give people hope and rehabilitation. I know what isolation does to my mental health so I can't imagine if I was someone that struggled with aggression and anger by using violence and having someone lock me up in solitary confinement with those type of thoughts and not having any kind of Hope or help. You're literally creating a more dangerous monster than they were prior. We all make our choices but when you treat someone like an animal that's what you're going to get. I'm sure I'm going to get a lot of negative feedback on what I'm saying but I'm just trying to see this from my own experiences. I've had run into with the law for different reasons. I struggled with drugs and alcohol and got arrested a few times and I witnessed firsthand what solitary confinement did to people I knew. It changes a person and darkens their minds. The devil can have his way with you even more when you're alone in a dark place

Nothing more than a glorified BABY SITTER. when the state takes "custody" of an individual wether an infant child or hardened criminal the state is taking over responsible of the health and wellbeing of that individual. Granted that's 2 opposite ends of the spectrum.

If a man murdered me, hell murdered someone of my family, I’d be devastated, but I would never even want that very person to be in a situation like 1:20 how utterly soul stealing and horrific. They ought to be executed instead of this suffering, how is this not a human rights issue. Regardless of your stance on prisoners rights, this violates human rights, which applies to all life, even the lives of killers.

I spent many years in jail due to my actions. I got myself cleaned up straightened up and now I have a house on a lake. So I have very little sympathy for these people they're going to have to learn the hard way the worst part and what I do have sympathy for is the fact that they will never be able to live down their crimes even though they serve their time. 80% of employers today will not hire ex-convicts. And that makes life really hard now that I sympathize with. If you're still under sentence and you're doing your time I have no sympathy cuz you got what you earned.

It’s fair to ask what it costs to maintain these prisoners and whether the result is worth the cost. There are better solutions to the perpetual problem of violent crime including everything from investment in early childhood and family support to capital punishment. Filling up prisoners with lifers doesn’t solve the problem, it just prolongs it.

It's not the prisons that make a society bad, prisons are just a reflection of the state of society. It's not like if we make conditions in prisons wonderful, all those criminals will stop being criminals. On the contrary, criminals will be even less afraid of going to prison if it's like a country club in there. Prisons are supposed to be miserable places that people fear, so that they stop committing crimes.

People or animals, both have to learn how to live constructively, benefit for themselves & others. That takes patience, practice

The staff at Rikers is SO unprofessional, many of the female guards maintain relationships with violent inmates, allowing phones, drugs, sometimes weapons to inmates! Because of my status as a Harlem drug kingpin,I was given the respect due someone of my status, but it disgusted me the way the inmates have taken over and intimidate other inmates..Of course after my bail reduction I was out of there, but I actually bailed a couple of less fortunate guys, most likely innocent,to save them from constant harassment!!

Solitary confinement has been used in the American penal system on and off since 1829. The Quakers, who first used the practice in America, believed that inmates would use the time introspectively. Bibles were given as the only material allowed. However, inmates either came out of confinement insane, decidedly more violent, or committed suicide. The practice was hailed a failure and was no longer used as punishment. The Quakers were smart cookies. Why do keep doing the same thing over and over and excepting different results? You know, Einstein's definition of insanity.

Only people they wouldn't send there was sex offenders be abuse they get whacked their first week.i had several cell mates with 20 plus years and even consecutive life sentences. They never put two big timers in the same cell heads bump and they have to deal with it.. They cell people up based on who they think will get along rather than time or crime. They don't care who gets punked or doesn't as long as they don't have to deal with it on their end.

Anthony Baekeland succumbed in Rikers Island in March 1981 as a suicide. Brought up in a gilded life and living in Spain, Majorca, Italy and London it was a life luxury indolence. But the seeds of destruction were in his genes. After committing matricide in 81 Cadogan Square/ London he was consigned to Brixton prison and then 8years in Broadmoor asylum in Berkshire. He then returned to New York but then lodged with his grandmother Nina he stabbed her during a psychotic episode. Anthony then found himself in a cell in Riker's Island. It was a gilded life spent in the sunlight that descended into nightmare and finally sweet oblivion, his cremation symbolic of freedom. RIP Anthony @ Barbara ☘🇮🇪🌻

I was on Rikers Island in 2013. I was extradited to NY from YORK CI Level 5 Correctional Institution in Niantic, CT for cases out of The Bronx during my 2 Year and 1 say incarceration to have my open cases sentenced. It is a holding facility, a city jail, Rose M. Singer Detention Facility for women. It is disgusting and dirty but far from dangerous and not for nothing the healthcare is 100 times better than Connecticut if you're sick you see a doctor the next day and Connecticut you have to write a request and then another and another and end up dead by the time you see someone with a medical degree. Roaches, Rats, Flies and maggots are just a few among the Creatures whom inhabit the jail.

Do not all people understand the danger of corruption? It’s a nation sickness. I hate corrupted people who are a part of the government. (But of course to heal it completely there should be no corruption justified, small or big.) Many many countries in this world are not wealthy because of them, them who steal from people.
I think such people deserve it, you are a monster if most people of your country you are supposed to serve barely make the ends meet and big portion of your country resources goes to you and your buddies pockets.

That’s the problem, the majority aren’t in there for first degree major offenses like you mentioned. Some are there for stealing stuff of relatively low value, some for selling some weed in a corner st the wrong moment st the wrong time. I get that abiding by the law is important, but this kind of disproportionate punishment is just gonna radicalize and further mess up young people who committed non violent offences, who oftentimes did so out of survival instinct because they were born in extreme poverty in run down neighbourhoods, where there isn’t any funding for education programs or places to learn a trade for little cost, etc.
They’re just going to turn most people who end up there into even more violent, dangerous and messed up real criminals… even those who weren’t like that in the first place. Build another facility where you can separate young from non young offenders for starters, so that the older hardened criminals don’t indoctrinate and brains wash the younger people into becoming the same hardened old criminal type, force them to join a gang, etc.

Actually making "lock down" more of a punishment with the want and need of getting out

I've been to prison. They treat you subhuman and then wonder why people act subhuman.....duh. The punishment is being there. They act like going out of their way to make your time hard is part of their job. Truthfully just as many c.o.s need help as the inmates. And there sits the head of the dept of corrections talking about we need to do this and that ......well do it then idiot that's his job.

How can the officers strive for something better for the inmates when both the inmates and the government are on their asses? They can't. It's up to the laws regarding Rikers and the true enforcers of the jail rules, and I don't see them changing anything for the better.

That's unfair! 😭 There are murderers and rapists out there living with slightest or no punishment at all.
